Maine seeks funds for land buy
By Associated Press, 6/7/2003
Governor John Baldacci said the land purchase from Wagner Forest Management would preserve traditional public access for recreation and maintain a working forest in eastern Washington County. Robert Newell, governor of the Passamaquoddy tribe, said the project would help preserve the tribe's way of life. ''We believe in conserving our natural resources,'' he said. ''A project of this magnitude is the only way to preserve local traditions.'' The New England Forestry Foundation and the Downeast Lakes Land Trust are working to raise the $35 million needed. The 340,000 acres are home to a cold water fishery, rare flora and fauna, old-growth forests, and an array of migratory birds and mammals. The land encompasses 445 miles of undeveloped shoreline on 60 lakes and 54,000 acres of productive wetlands. Under the proposed agreement, sustainable forest harvesting would continue throughout the forest, and a conservation easement would be held by the Forestry Foundation. The 27,000 acres around Farm Cove would be owned by the Downeast Lakes Land Trust.
