New England Forestry Foundation is growing a worthy conservation successor to its groundbreaking
Pingree Forest project, which the foundation completed in 2001. Downeast Lakes
Forestry Partnership builds on our experience with the Pingree project and expands our reach in several
exciting ways - it involves a partnership with two local land trusts, includes two fee purchases of critical
river and lake shorefront and acquisition of a sustainable forestry easement on over 312,000 acres.

NEFF recently purchased a conservation easement for the Pingree Forest Project in Maine. The final
easement protects 762,192 acres instead of the original 754,673 acres due to participation from the Maine
Chapter of The Nature Conservancy. The Pingree family has owned this land in northern and western Maine
for seven generations. The project now protects a green-certified, "well-managed" forest that is
home to a spectacular assemblage of natural resources. More»

NEFF is nearing the end of the three year research project at Hersey Mountain. Over 4000 acres
were protected there with the goal of exploring the relationship between managed lands and wildlands.
When the biological survey is completed this year, we will make a decision about how to divide the land
between wildlands and managed lands, and then protect these designations with easements. We will monitor
Hersey mountain for medium and long term impacts of this balance on the health of the ecosystem.
